LOWDEN S-25 (2015)<\/h2>\n

Lowden is a small Irish company that builds some of the finest acoustic guitars today. I\u2019ve been playing Lowden guitars for more than 10 years and at one point owned 5 of them. Today I have settled with just two.<\/p>\n

The S-25 is a small-bodied S model with cedar top and rosewood back and sides. It is equipped with a Headway pickup and has been my main guitar for both recording and live concerts for the last 10 years.<\/p>\n

I strongly prefer cedar tops as they give the guitar a nice warmth, and the rosewood back and sides gives it a nice crystal-clear tone.<\/p>\n

You can hear the S-25 on tracks like “Ouverture” and “The Raven King” and all of my “Summer Jazz” concert.<\/p>\n

NIGEL THORNBORY “SILVERTON” (1996?)<\/h2>\n

This is a quite rare guitar built by the English luthier Nigel Thornbory sometime in the mid-nineties. Not much information is available about Nigel\u2019s guitars, but it is incredibly well built and quite unique in its design. Apparently, he retired from building guitar some time ago. I didn\u2019t pay a lot of money for this one and it is just as good as my Lowdens.<\/p>\n

All his guitars were for some reason named after villages in Devon in southern England. The \u201cSilverton\u201d model was designed together with the British folk-guitarist Ian A. Anderson (not the guy from Jethro Tull), who has also been kind enough to share with me the little I know about the guitar (he own two similar ones). If you know anything about Nigel Thornbory please write to me.<\/p>\n

This one is with spruce top and rosewood back and sides. It also has a Headway pickup and when playing concerts, I tend to switch between this one and the S-25 \u2013 as they both sounds great amplified.<\/p>\n

LOWDEN F-22 (1994)<\/h2>\n

This is my other Lowden guitar and I\u2019ve had this one for the longest time. I bought it quite cheap on eBay 15 years ago and when I received it, it was in terrible condition, so I took a long time to get it in playable condition again. The previous owner had done all kinds of strange things to it.<\/p>\n

Now it sounds good again and the combination of cedar top and mahogany back and sides with the bigger body size gives it a totally different sound than my other Lowden. It has a much more \u201cwoody\u201d sound and a more \u201cAmerican\u201d tone. It also works great in alternative tunings like DADGAD.<\/p>\n

It also has a Headway pickup but doesn\u2019t sound as good amplified as the two guitars above, so its primarily a \u201drecording guitar\u201d.<\/p>\n

You can hear it on tracks like “Wordless” and “Evening Star”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

LEON BALLARD BANJO (2015)<\/h2>\n

I play a 5-string banjo build by the great Leon Ballard of Suffolk Great Britain.<\/p>\n

You can hear it on tracks like “The Heron” and “Mr. Morgan”.<\/p>\n
